Cold Winter's Night

This first story takes place in Iron Mountain Michigan in early February in 2001 at my aunt and uncles house. It was a cold night; around zero degrees with a strong wind blowing outside. In the middle of winter in the upper peninsula it gets really cold. They had just gone to bed and my aunt asked my uncle, "Did you lock the back door?" "Yeah I did", he said. Actually my aunt said that she thought he was just saying that because he didn't what to get up and check. Sometime in the night the door blew open on the north side of the house and the cold air came rushing in. The back door was right by the kitchen so that was chilled first, then the dining room and the living after that. When morning came the house was good and cold. My uncle was the first one downstairs. As soon as he started down he could feel the freezing air. He went to the kitchen and saw the backdoor open and he slammed it shut right away. But the damage was done. The downstairs had chilled down between the lower teens by the door to the 30's in the living room. My aunt came downstairs wondering why it was so cold. She said to my uncle, "You forgot to lock it didn't you!?" "I guess so", he said. The potatoes and the onions were frozen solid. A few of the house plants froze to death. They can just be lucky that it wasn't snowing that night!
